IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement signed among the 48 contiguous States of the United States and the 10 Canada Provinces bordering the US to lessen the burden of the truckers in
fuel reporting.

Should I register for IFTA in my state?

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement signed by the United States and the 10 Canadian Provinces bordering the US to decrease the burden of fuel reporting for the truckers.

A motor vehicle is considered as a qualified vehicle under the following standards:

  • A motor vehicle is considered as a qualified vehicle under the following standards.
  • Traveled in at least two or more IFTA jurisdictions.
  • Heavy vehicles with three or more axles or used in combination exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

Recreational vehicles are not considered as a qualified Motor Vehicle unless used for
business purposes.

How do I apply for an IFTA license?

Fill and complete Form IFTA-1, New York State International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) License Application and mail the completed license application to:

What fees must I pay under IFTA?

You will need one decal set per qualified vehicle. Each decal set costs $8 and if additional decals are desired, they cost $4 per set.

What credentials will I receive?

Truckers will receive an IFTA license and a set of decals credentials valid for a year. Each qualified motor vehicle requires a licensed photocopy to be kept safe in the vehicle. The IFTA license is valid from January 1 through December 31 for the calendar year.

Do I file a quarterly fuel tax report if I didn't run during the quarter?

You need to submit a "zero report" to file the quarterly fuel tax return if no fuel used throughout the tax year.

What is the penalty and interest rate for filing a late quarterly
fuel tax report?

A penalty of $50 or 10% of tax due, whichever is greater, and 0.4167% of interest per month will be charged for failing to file a tax return, filing a late tax return, and underpaying taxes due on all delinquent tax dues at each jurisdiction.

How do I obtain a return?

File and pay online using IFTA E-file or file manually using Form IFTA-100-MN.

Due Dates:

Failure to file a return, filing a late return, or failure to remit any or all tax due will result in a penalty of $50.00 or 10% of the net tax due to all member jurisdictions, whichever is great. Interest is computed on all delinquent taxes dues each jurisdiction at a rate of 0.4167%
per month.
